{"id":808,"date":"2015-05-09T12:57:14","date_gmt":"2015-05-09T19:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2015.denver.wordcamp.org\/?post_type=wcb_session&#038;p=808"},"modified":"2015-06-13T14:28:53","modified_gmt":"2015-06-13T21:28:53","slug":"your-website-might-be-hacked","status":"publish","type":"wcb_session","link":"https:\/\/denver.wordcamp.org\/2015\/session\/your-website-might-be-hacked\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Website Might Be Hacked, and You Don&#8217;t Even Know It!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know your WordPress website can be hacked without your knowing it?\u00a0You usually won\u2019t find out your site is hacked until things get really bad, such as when:<\/p>\n<div>\u2022 Your web host shuts down your site because it is distributing malware (though often they won&#8217;t notice)<\/div>\n<div>\u2022 You get an email from someone across the globe asking you to please desist in using\u00a0their domain in an email spam campaign<\/div>\n<div>\u2022 Visitors to your site are warned that it is a \u201cphishing site\u201d and is stealing information from people<\/div>\n<div>\u2022 Google warns people to not open your website because it is infected with malware<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Without knowing it for months or even years, your website could be \u201cinnocently&#8221; promoting porn, pharmaceuticals, or pay day loans; infecting your friends\u2019 computers with viruses, trojans, or other\u00a0malware; or participating in a botnet that is infiltrating sites across the world. Security scanners and plugins like Sucuri and Wordfence do not pick up on many of these hacks. So, even if the\u00a0site shows as \u201cclean\u201d that doesn\u2019t meant it is.<\/p>\n<p>Why should you care? Because getting off the phish tank list is hard. Your search engine rankings could tank. You could lose clients who are angry that your\u00a0site directed them to a site that infected their computers. And, well, caring is the ethical thing to do as a business owner.<\/p>\n<p>Attend this talk to learn how to spot a hack in your WordPress files and dashboard, clean up a hacked site, and prevent hacks.
